ProteomeXchange, the international proteomics data consortium funded by the European Commission under FP7 (grant 260558), was managed from the start by SNM’s founder, then on the staff of the EMBL European Bioinformatics Institute. When he left the EBI in 2014, SNM was added to the consortium as a partner so the same manager could carry the project through to its close — which is why SCIENTIFIC NETWORK MANAGEMENT SL appears in the CORDIS participant list for a project that began in 2011.

In 2023, SNM joined the consortium delivering AnkaTheraHub, financed by the European Union under the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) — the EU’s external funding instrument for candidate countries, not a Framework Programme.

Between them, the managers at SNM have run seven international scientific projects and networks since 2006, under Framework Programmes 6 and 7 and Horizon 2020. Five of them predate the company, which was founded in 2013. Six carry a CORDIS grant number that can be looked up; AnkaTheraHub is an IPA contract and is not in CORDIS.

The project builds infrastructure and a business network for SMEs in the health sector, to raise their competitiveness through joint R&D projects, technology transfer with universities and the production of high-technology, high-value-added medical products. Alongside it, research infrastructures are being established to develop treatments and preventive measures for viral diseases — Covid-19 and derivative epidemics — and for cancer.

The ProteomeXchange Consortium was established to provide globally coordinated standard data submission and dissemination pipelines across the main proteomics repositories, and to encourage open data policies in the field. The same person ran its administration, reporting and Commission liaison from the first day to the last — first from inside the coordinating institute, then through SNM after it joined the consortium in 2014. A change of employer cost the project no handover.

Managed since SNM was founded

The management function here is supplied under contract; SNM is not a beneficiary of the grant. Where it was a consortium member in its own name — ProteomeXchange, where SCIENTIFIC NETWORK MANAGEMENT SL appears in the CORDIS participant list, and AnkaTheraHub — that is the pair above. The distinction is worth drawing: a manager can be either, and it changes who signs what.

RECOGNISED

Retinal and cognitive dysfunction in type 2 diabetes: unravelling the common pathways and identification of patients at risk of dementia

A 21-partner, nine-country consortium testing whether the retina — reachable with ordinary non-invasive imaging — can identify people with type 2 diabetes who are at risk of cognitive decline. EU contribution €6.0M.
